Pain Issues
Hypnosis / hypnotherapy is also having great effect in psychosomatic medicine. All kinds of ailments, which are physically real, but for which after extensive testing, no cause can be found, may have a psychological orientation. Numerous studies show that the mind has the ability to manipulate tissue into feeling or producing whatever effect it deems appropriate.
Consider the placebo effect: when the mind believes the pill will cure the person, sugar pills cure all manner of diseases. Conversely, when the mind believes the pill will produce certain side effects, e.g., the side effects of chemotherapy, all of those side effects, like nausea and hair loss, quickly become apparent. That very same power can be corralled using hypnosis / hypnotherapy to get at the underlying mental issues that may be responsible for physical problems. Often, repressed anger and rage will pile up within a person to the point where the subconscious gets concerned that it might overflow into the conscious mind and drive the person insane.
To prevent this, it creates a distraction. Once the person becomes focused on their pain, the possibility of overflowing anger and rage recedes and the subconscious feels that it has made the person safe. However, the strategy is not useful to the person because they feel miserable all the time. For more information on this effect, read Dr. John Sarno’s book,"Divided Mind."
Hypnosis / hypnotherapy can help resolve rage issues. Medical issues where no amount of testing can find a cause (no matter how much testing is done), are often of this type. As the subconscious releases its anger in healthy ways, it no longer has to create the distraction and problems vanish.
Where will hypnosis / hypnotherapy take us tomorrow? Who knows, with the mushrooming cost of health care, in twenty years, people might go to their hypnotherapist to find out if they actually need to see their doctor.
