Conscious & Subconscious Mind

Hypnosis / hypnotherapy divides the mind into two parts. The conscious mind does our reasoning. Its currency of thought is words. When we’re "in" our conscious mind, we think with words. Its enforcement tool is the Will. It uses the Will to maintain self-control of our being - the self.

That’s why, when we speak of gaining discipline, all we’re actually talking about activities which dramatically strengthen the Will. This makes the conscious mind boss. Disciplined people are those who’ve learned how to force themselves to do what a part of them doesn’t want to do.

The second is the subconscious. It controls habits, long term memory, autonomic nervous system, attitudes, feelings and emotions. Its currency of thought is pictures. When we think in pictures, i.e., daydreaming, we’re "in" our subconscious. The tool of the subconscious is the imagination. With it humans do wonders.

The subconscious is vastly more powerful in governing behavior because it controls our emotions and feelings. Moreover, being the repository of core human tendencies like our rebellious nature, if provoked, it can easily resist the wants of our conscious mind. That’s why reverse psychology works.

The different aims and focus of the different parts of our mind can lead to wars within us. Tragically, the battles inevitably cause physical and emotional misery. But this war does not have to continue. By talking directly to the subconscious, hypnosis / hypnotherapy can end the war for you!
